We are all in a hurry. If we want to lose weight we want to do it now and the very first thing that people think about when they want to lose weight is going on a diet. And a diet in this case means severe calorie restriction.

Now it is quite normal to lose weight fairly quickly when you do this but before we look at what usually happens here are a few figures for you to look at. 98% of dieters fail and most people having finished a diet end up about five and a half pounds heavier than before they first started.

And if you look around you may see for yourself that this is true, it may have even happened to you. How many people do you know that have been on a diet, lost a lot of weight and when you see them a few months later they are even bigger than before?

Once you understand a little about the human body it is easy to see why this happens. Through evolution our bodies have been genetically programmed to store food as the natural order has been food in plenty, followed by periods of food shortage re-occurring. That cycle has now been broken, for us in the West there is now no periods of food shortage. Supermarkets provide food all year round, and lots of it.

Now as soon as you drop your calorie intake by dieting, your body registers not a diet but famine. Consequently strong energy saving systems swing into place to conserve the bodies energy supplies, in other words your excess weight. Your metabolism will slow right down so that you will feel constantly fatigued, tired, totally lethargic, and you will feel hungry, almost unbearably so.

Consequently when you break the diet and you will have to sooner or later, your body will pile weight on as if there was no tomorrow in anticipation of the next famine. And just to be sure it will pile on a little bit extra, just to be on the safe side. This phenomenon is called rebound weight gain and is the dieters worst nightmare as all that hard work and suffering has been for nothing.

But that doesn't mean you can't lose weight. You just need the right information so that you work with your body not against it. There's no need for hunger, tiredness or extreme will power, just the right information and weight loss will be a walk in the park.
